DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class supervises the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant with a point score of 76 or greater which utilizes the activated sludge process.  A 4A operator is qualified to operate a wastewater treatment plant of any capacity and any mode of treatment in addition to the activated sludge system.  The work is reviewed by a technical supervisor by submission of reports and on-site inspection.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

               Performs chemical tests of wastewater at various stages of processing;

               Checks pumps, aeration equipment, chlorination equipment, alarm systems, etc. for proper operation;

               Performs maintenance work on motors, pumps, blowers etc.;

               Performs housekeeping and grounds keeping chores;

               Prepares requisitions for supplies, materials and equipment;

               Assists in preparation of operating budgets;

               Supervises subordinate plant workers and schedules work assignments for each shift.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the practices used and equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant with a point score of 76 or greater which utilizes the activated sludge process; good knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment and disposal; knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operations; ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to maintain simple records and prepare routine reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

               OPEN COMPETITIVE

               Possession of a Type 4A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator's certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

           

            PROMOTIONAL

Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Senior Wastewater Treatment Plant Helper; or,

            Four (4) years of permanent competitive status as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Helper.

            NOTE: Candidates must posses a Type 4A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator's certificate,

            issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

           Candidates must maintain a Grade 4A Certificate, issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, throughout employment in this title.

     At the time of appointment and during employment in this title employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
