DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs limited supervisory work involving the responsibility during an assigned shift for the efficient operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant with a point score of 56-75, which utilizes treatment processes other than the activated sludge process.  The employee may also work as an operator in a wastewater treatment plant utilizing the activated sludge process.  The senior operator's work differs from that of an operator in the higher degree of independence, initiative and responsibility involved.  Supervision is exercised over a small number of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators (2) in the performance of their assigned duties.  Work is reviewed through conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises and participates in starting and stopping of pumps, motors, air compressors, and related machines and equipment; makes minor repairs to the machinery and equipment; records readings from meters and gauges;

            Supervises and participates in the treating and disposing of sludge; adding chlorine to wastewater; takes samples of wastewater for testing; makes necessary test for control of plant operations;

            Instructs, trains and supervises the work of support personnel in plant operations;

            Maintains a log of plant operations and related records;

            Supervises and participates in duties connected with the maintenance of buildings and grounds.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the practices and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant with facilities for chemical precipitation, sludge vacuum filtration, sludge incineration, separate sludge digestion, or any other biological oxidation process other than the activated sludge process; thorough knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment and disposal; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of meters; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Possession of a Type 2, 3, 4, 2A, 3A, or 4A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator's certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and two (2) years of operating experience in a wastewater treatment plant with a point score of 31 or greater.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (2), Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (2A), Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (3), Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (3A), or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (4A).

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

          Candidates must maintain a Grade 2, 3, 4, 2A, 3A, or 4A Certificate, issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, while employed in this title.

            Depending upon assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
