DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs all the planning, estimations, and general supervision for the Town's electrical services department.  This employee supervis­es Maintenance Mechanics IV who are crew leaders in the performance of craftsman level electrical work.  The work is performed independently under the general supervision of an administrator.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Plans, assigns, and supervises the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and systems;

          Supervises and inspects the installation and maintenance of light and power circuits;

          Supervises and inspects the installation and maintenance of electrical equip­ment and appliances such as the power house, heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems for Town buildings;

          Supervises and inspects the installation and maintenance of Town street lights, utility poles, line equipment, and hardware, including underground feeds to street lighting installations.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and practices of electri­cal work; thorough knowledge of the pertinent rules, regulations and codes applica­ble to the electrical trade; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards of and the safety precautions necessary for the work; ability to supervise employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to make time, materi­al and cost estimates; ability to understand and follow oral and written instruc­tions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          (a) Completion of two (2) years of courses in electrical systems in a vocational school program and six (6) years of experience in installing, maintaining, or repairing electrical systems, including two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity; or,

          (b) Eight (8) years of experience in installing, maintaining, or repairing electrical systems, including two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity; or,

          (c) An equivalent combination of the above education or training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid Suffolk County license as an electrician at the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title.
