DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class monitors the meters and gauges of a central control board of a semi-automatic incinerator operation and makes adjustments to maintain optimum temperatures and achieve the most efficient combustion.  The incumbent is also responsible for making visual checks of the furnace and auxiliary equipment to ensure proper operation.  Supervision is received from an Incinerator Plant Foreman or Supervisor through observation of work performed, periodic checks of operating equipment, and review of records maintained by the incumbent.

                       

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Monitors the instruments on the central control board of the incinerator for irregularities in the temperatures of the furnaces and combustion chamber, the overfire and underfire air drafts, hydraulic pressure on the pumps, pressure on the grates and other indicators;

            Regulates the temperature of the fire by changing the speed of the grates or by adjusting the underfire and overfire air by manual control;

            Makes frequent visual checks of the fires to ensure that refuse is burning properly;

            Maintains contact with the crane operator on the kind of refuse being fed into the hopper to determine the grate speed for proper combustion;

            Makes periodic visual checks of auxiliary equipment, including pistons, water jackets, blast gates, fans and hydraulic pumps to ensure that they are functioning correctly; notifies the Incinerator Plant Foreman of any problems;

            Maintains records of instrument readings and operations checked.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of the basic principles of the combustion process in a large municipal incinerator operation; knowledge of the operating characteristics of incinerator furnaces, auxiliary equipment and machinery and pollution control systems; ability to read, interpret and record data from gauges, meters and other instruments; ability to detect through observation defects in mechanical and electrical equipment, including engines, hydraulic pumps, pistons, fans, and grate systems; ability to maintain routine clerical records; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
