DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the
establishment and implementation of preventive maintenance and equipment repair
systems for sewer districts. The work
involves responsibility for maintenance activities in the treatment facilities,
pumping stations and collection systems.
Supervision is exercised over the maintenance staff through supervisory
personnel. Work is reviewed through
conferences, consultations and the submission of required reports. Does related work as required.
Establishes
and implements equipment repair and preventive maintenance systems for complex
and varied wastewater treatment plant and pumping station equipment and
auxiliary equipment, including high pressure steam boilers, incinerators, ozone
generators, stack scrubbers, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems,
collection system maintenance equipment and electrical equipment;
Establishes
and maintains an inventory control system for equipment, supplies, tools and
parts;
Supervises
inspections, maintenance and repair of vehicles and related equipment;
Assists
in the coordination of maintenance activities in sewage treatment plants and
sewage collection systems;
Assists
in the training and evaluation of maintenance personnel.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, equipment and tools used in
wastewater treatment facility maintenance and repair; thorough knowledge of the
occupational hazards present and the safety precautions necessary for the
maintenance work; good knowledge of the general layout and component structures
and equipment of the wastewater treatment facilities; ability to establish and
implement effective preventive maintenance and repair systems; ability to
supervise employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale;
ability to keep a variety of records; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
(a)
Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university
with a Bachelor’s Degree in natural science or in sanitary, civil, mechanical,
electrical or electronic engineering or a related field, and four (4) years of
experience in the maintenance of major equipment at a Type A wastewater
treatment plant or related facility, including two (2) years in a supervisory
position; or,
(b)
Sixty (60) college credits from a New York State or regionally accredited
college or university towards a degree in natural science or in a sanitary,
civil, mechanical, electrical or electronic engineering or a related filed, and
six (6) years of experience in the maintenance of major equipment at a Type A
wastewater treatment plant or a related facility, including two (2) years in a
supervisory position; or,
(c)
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and eight (8) years of experience in the maintenance of major
equipment at a Type A wastewater treatment plant or related facility, including
two (2) years in a supervisory position; or,
(d) An
equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of
(a), (b) and (d).
PROMOTIONAL
Two
(2) years of permanent competitive status as a Maintenance Crew Chief
(Wastewater Treatment) or Maintenance Crew Chief (Steam and HVAC).
