DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class supervises and performs wastewater treatment plant maintenance work.  The incumbent is responsible for the work performed by subordinate staff and crew, task assignment, and supply procurement.  Supervi­sion is received from a technical supervisor through reports and observations of work in progress or completed.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Plans, assigns and supervises the work of a number of wastewater treatment plant maintenance personnel;

          Directs and participates in the maintenance of machines and equipment, assuring the availability of tools and proper adherence to safety procedures;

          Determines the proper methods of accomplishing assigned work based upon personal experience, maintenance manuals, technical advice, and the conditions of the repair site;

          Periodically inspects all machines and equipment under control within the wastewater treatment plants;

          Requisitions required tools, equipment, supplies and spare parts as required;

          Participates in the input to a preventive maintenance program and assigns work as scheduled;

          Assists in the preparation of the section budget and annual consumable supplies order.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the tools, techniques and terminology in the repairs, adjustment and inspection of machinery and equipment used in wastewater treatment plants; thorough knowledge of diesel and gasoline combustion engines; good knowledge of supervisory techniques and procedures; good knowledge of safety and accident prevention in the use of equipment and machinery; ability to adapt parts of existing machinery with available materials in times of emergen­cy; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full perfor­mance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, valves, compressors, electrical and mechanical equipment, two (2) years of which were in the supervision of a maintenance crew in the above trades.

 

NOTE:  Additional experience will be substituted for the high school requirement on a year-for-year basis.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Depending upon the assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State
