DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of high-pressure steam, heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems.  The incumbent is responsible for the work performed by a staff and crew, task assignment and supply procurement.  Supervision is received from a technical supervisor through reports and observation of work in progress or completed.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Plans, assigns and supervises the work of various level Maintenance Mechanics and others as needed;

          Directs and participates in maintenance of machines and equipment, assuring availability of tools and proper adherence to safety procedures;

          Determines proper methods of accomplishing assigned work based upon personal experience, maintenance manuals, technical advice and conditions of the repair site;

          Periodically inspects all steam and HVAC equipment; directs and/or participates in repair of this equipment;

          Requisitions required tools, equipment, supplies and spare parts as required;

          Participates in developing a preventive maintenance program and assigns work as scheduled;

          Assists in preparation of the section budget and annual consumable supplies order.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques and terminology used in the repair, adjustment and inspection of machinery and equipment utilized in high pressure steam, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems; thorough knowledge of high pressure steam boilers and generators; good knowledge of supervisory techniques and procedures; good knowledge of safety and accident prevention in the use of equipment and machinery; ability to adapt parts of existing machinery with available materials in times of emergency; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to supervise a staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and six (6) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of high-pressure steam vessels and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment.

 

NOTE:  Additional experience will be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
