DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for overseeing and participating in the operation of a diesel powered electric generating plant. Responsibility is included for supervising and participating in the work of operators. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Supervises and participates in the work of operators;

         Schedules overhaul, repair and maintenance of generating units and auxiliary equipment;

         Oversees the starting up and shutting down of equipment in both routine and emergency situations;

         Reviews equipment inspections done by staff;

         Verifies safety of outages before issuing clearances;

         Makes inspection tours of the plant to observe functioning of equipment and takes action to adjust emergency conditions;

         Prepares reports to supervisor and to various governmental regulating agencies, as required.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the construction and operation of large diesel engines, electric generators, and the auxiliary equipment associated with such engine equipment; thorough knowledge of the principles and procedures in operating diesel generating units; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of electric power load dispatching; thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions; good knowledge of hand and power tools; skill in operating diesel engines, electric generators, auxiliary equipment, hand and power tools; ability to recognize malfunctioning of mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to act and act quickly in emergencies; ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work of employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; tact; courtesy; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and five (5) of years experience operating electrical generating equipment.

        

NOTE:  Additional relevant experience may be substituted for the high school requirement on a year-for-year basis.
