DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This position involves the performance of all mechanical
and operation tasks in the maintenance, repair and operation of a diesel or gas
powered electric generating plant at an apprentice level. The employee functions under the direct
supervision of a technical supervisor, and is expected to perform the skilled
and mechanical work necessary to maintain and ensure operation of the power
plant. Employees
in this class are responsible for maintaining the plant in a clean and orderly
condition as well as assisting in overhauling large diesel or electric
generator units,
as well as power plant auxiliary equipment.
They are expected to perform routine mechanical tasks using hand and
power tools. Employees should exhibit
ability to think and act quickly in an emergency situation. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Operates
one or more units in a large diesel or gas powered electric generating plant,
when necessary.
Does preventive maintenance on power plant auxiliary
equipment.
Maintains plant in a clean and orderly condition.
Assists in the overhaul of the large diesel units, gas or
electric generator machinery.
Assists in the maintenance, overhaul or replacement of
all auxiliary equipment.
Assists in the inspection and maintenance of plant
instruments.
Performs routine mechanical tasks using hand and some
power tools.
Reads electric, gas and water meters; may maintain daily
records of readings.
May do routine service on automotive equipment.
May assist other departments in their work when
required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working
knowledge of the construction and operation of large diesel or electric
generating engines; working knowledge of electric generators and the auxiliary
equipment associated with such engines and equipment; working knowledge of the
occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for this operation; good
knowledge in the use of hand and power tools; skill in operating diesel
engines, electric generators, auxiliary equipment and hand and power tools;
basic understanding of electricity; ability to follow oral and written
instructions; ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One year of experience in the operation and/or
maintenance of mechanical equipment such as diesel engines, gas engines or
electric generating equipment.
