DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class supervises and participates in the installation, maintenance and repair of an electric power distribution system within a utilities district.  The incumbent is responsible for power lines, electrical distribution equipment, streetlights and traffic signals; and supervises and instructs a crew of skilled line workers in all phases of work.  Work is performed with considerable technical independence, and is reviewed through reports and observation for compliance with codes, standards and regulations of federal, state and local agencies. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Supervises a line crew in the construction of new distribution lines, maintenance of existing lines and the installation of industrial, commercial and residential services;

         Supervises the installation of transformers, regulators, street light banks, traffic signals, multiple streetlights, switchgear, panel boards and accessory equipment, including the setting of utility poles;

         Supervises the maintenance of a municipal fire alarm system and street lighting system;

         Performs complex power distribution tasks as needed;

         Conducts tests of wattage and voltage throughout the system, diagnoses and corrects faults, breaks and interruptions in the distribution system'         Conducts continuous safety programs.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction, installation and maintenance of overhead electrical utility systems; good knowledge of electrical theory and circuits; good knowledge of recognized safety practices and regulations; good knowledge of the codes, standards and regulations of the electric utility regulatory agencies; some knowledge of first aid and methods of applying resuscitation; ability to interpret electrical plans, blueprints and diagrams; ability to prepare concise and accurate reports; ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; ability to plan and supervise the work of personnel and to deal effectively and tactfully with the general public regulatory agency’s personnel and supervisors to insure the efficient and effective operation of the district; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

        

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         Either:

         a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Business Administration, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology or a related field, and three (3) years of experience in the construction and maintenance of overhead electrical distribution lines and facilities, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or,

b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and possession of a current Master Electrician certificate issued by the Suffolk County Department of Consumer Affairs, and three (3) years of experience in the construction and maintenance of overhead electrical distribution lines and facilities, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or,

         c) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and five (5) years of experience in the construction and maintenance of overhead electrical distribution lines and facilities, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

 

NOTE: One (1) year of technical education in electricity will be substituted for two (2) years of high school study.
