DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of an electric power distribution system within a utilities district. The incumbent may work independently or in a crew depending on the complexity of the task, except that the incumbent will not work on energized lines exceeding 5000 volts except when accompanied by a higher-level mechanic. Work is subject to inspection in progress or upon completion by higher-level mechanics or other supervisory personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Participates in
setting poles, stringing lines and cables and installing commercial and
domestic electric service and equipment;
Installs and blocks
meters; reads meters; makes minor repairs to traffic signals; changes street
lights; splices cable;
Participates in the
construction of new distribution lines, the repair and maintenance of existing
lines and services and the installation and repair of transformers, regulators,
panel boards, traffic signals, switch gear and related equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of the tools and materials used by craftsmen in the
electrical and related fields; working knowledge of the codes, standards and
regulations of the electric utility field; working knowledge of the theory and
principles of electrical distribution systems; some knowledge of electrical
circuits and schematics; skill in the use of common mechanical tools and
equipment; ability to interpret simple electrical plans, blue prints and
diagrams; ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high
school equivalency diploma, and three (3) years of experience in the construction
and maintenance of overhead electrical distribution lines and facilities.
NOTES:
One (1) year of technical education in the electrical field will be
substituted for two (2) years of high school study.
Possession of a
current Master Electrician certificate issued by the Suffolk County Department
of Consumer Affairs will be substituted for two (2) years of the education
and/or experience requirement.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Candidates may be required to possess a valid New York State driver's
license as determined by the appointing authority at the time of
appointment. If required, said license
must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
