DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is expected to
become familiar with the tools, techniques and equipment used in the trade; and
is expected to contribute some mechanical capability to the task at hand. This is an apprentice position in which the
incumbent assists lines mechanics; and performs a variety of semi-skilled
groundwork tasks in the electrical field.
Work is limited to energized secondary lines not to exceed 600 volts and
to primary lines when not energized.
Work is subject to inspection in progress or upon completion by
higher-level mechanics or other supervisory personnel. Does related work as required.
Assists a lines
mechanic in setting poles, stringing lines and cables, and installing
electrical service and equipment;
Performs various
ground work tasks; and prepares material for lines mechanics;
Works on secondary
distribution system lines not exceeding 600 volts when energized; works on
non-energized primary lines;
Reads meters, dig
holes and removes tree limbs and other debris which interferes with line work;
Assists in the
maintenance and minor repair of tools, utility trucks and equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Some knowledge of the tools and materials used by craftsmen in the
electrical and related trades; some skill in the use of hand tools and common
power tools used in maintenance and repair work; ability to learn the theory
and principles of electrical distribution systems; ability to learn to install,
maintain and repair electrical power lines and equipment; ability to learn the
codes, standards and regulations of the electric utility field; ability to
understand and follow oral and written instructions; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high
school equivalency diploma.
NOTE:
One (1) year of technical education in electricity will be substituted
for two (2) years of high school study.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Candidates may be required to possess a valid New York State driver's
license as determined by the appointing authority at the time of
appointment. If required, said license
must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
