CHIEF
AIRPORT FIRE SAFETY OFFICER 7705
An employee in
this class is responsible for directing and participating in all fire safety
operations for a commercial carrier airport.
Work involves responsibility for setting up and carrying out routine
inspection programs, periodic drills, and fire safety training programs. The employee is responsible for maintaining
records, and preparing reports of activities of the fire safety unit. The employee supervises all fire safety
personnel and a small clerical staff.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Commissioner and
Deputy Commissioner and is reviewed for adherence to airport policies and
Federal Aviation Administration, State and Town regulations. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Supervises the fire fighting and
rescue team at the airport;
Conducts training and retraining
programs for subordinate personnel;
Conducts periodic fire safety drills
for airport personnel;
Inspects all buildings and grounds
periodically for potential fire hazards and ensures that any hazardous fire
conditions are corrected;
Inspects all fire extinguishers and ensures
that they are replaced when necessary;
Assures that all airport-owned fire
fighting and rescue vehicles and equipment are maintained properly by
contractors and airport personnel;
Maintains employee, inspection, and
other pertinent records and reports;
Oversees the daily record keeping of
airport night lighting equipment and ensures that equipment is functioning
properly;
Keeps up to date with new methods of
fire fighting and any new federal regulations on airport fire and rescue
procedures;
Participates in snow removal
operations as required;
Administers first aid when necessary.

Comprehensive
knowledge of modern aircraft fire prevention and fire fighting techniques;
comprehensive knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing fire safety,
fire fighting and rescue at a federally licensed airport; thorough knowledge of
first aid methods and techniques; thorough knowledge of the operating
techniques of fire safety equipment and vehicles; good knowledge of office
operations and appliances; good knowledge of radio operation; ability to plan,
supervise and review the work of others in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to maintain records and prepare and submit
reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with the
airport administration, town officials and the general public; ability to speak
and write effectively; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and eight (8) years of
experience in the performance of aircraft rescue and fire fighting duties at an
air carrier airport certified for operation under Part 139 of Federal Airport
Regulations, four (4) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
PROMOTIONAL
One (1) year of permanent competitive
status as a Senior Airport Fire Safety Officer.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and during employment in this
title, employees must possess the following:
(a) Current NYS Emergency Medical Technician Certificate
– Basic. Employees must maintain this certification throughout employment in
this position;
(b) Hazardous Material Operations Certificate. Employees
must maintain this certification throughout employment in this position;
(c) Completion of Firefighter I and Firefighter II
Courses;
(d) Completion of one FAA “Hot Drill”.
Within six (6) months of employment, employees must
attain the following:
(a) Valid New York State Driver’s license, Class B
(Municipal Vehicles). Employees must maintain such license throughout
employment in this title.
