DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for performing skilled work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of tasks in one (1) or more of the craft areas pertinent to airport maintenance.  Incumbents are required to perform maintenance and repair work covering several building and mechanical trades, as well as grounds keeping and runway repair.  Responsibility is also included for crash and rescue procedures as related to aircraft.  Employees are responsible for determining materials and work methods used, and supervise semi-skilled and unskilled assistants.  Work is reviewed by the Airport Maintenance Supervisor or other assigned supervisor during progress and upon completion for compli­ance with specifications and standards.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Maintains airport buildings and grounds in such crafts as carpentry, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and janitorial services;

            Does general carpentry work in the construction, alteration and maintenance of buildings, floors, partitions, doors, wood fixtures and furniture;

            Installs, maintains, and repairs fire hydrants, valves, faucets, traps, sinks, washbowls, sewers, vents and other sanitary fixtures; maintains piping systems and opens clogged drains with a plunger or other device; tests for leaks and replaces leaky faucets;

            Prepares surfaces to be painted; mixes and matches paints and stains, applies paint to interiors and exteriors of buildings, walls, ceilings, and floors; applies varnish, shellac and stains as necessary;

            Operates and maintains heating and air conditioning equipment, regulates steam pressures and oil temperatures; repairs condensers, compressors, motors and controls;

            Assists in receiving and parking aircraft; operates affiliated aircraft ground support equipment; handles various types of aviation fuel;

            Serves as an airport volunteer firefighter.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the trade areas to which assigned; good knowledge of the methods and prac­tices employed in the performance of aircraft, ground support equipment and aviation fuels; good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precau­tions of the work; good knowledge of fire fighting equipment and its use and the methods and procedures employed in airport crash and rescue activities; skill in the use and care of the tools, materials and equipment of the trade areas concerned; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to interpret and work from rough sketches; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of semi-skilled and unskilled workers in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale, physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            Either:

            (a) Completion of two (2) years of vocational education courses in either a vocational school program or in an apprentice or training program in airport maintenance and repair and two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of airport facilities; or

            (b) Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of airport facilities; or

            (c) Satisfactory equivalent combination of the above education and experience.
