DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class is
responsible for supervising and participating in the operation and maintenance
of interior and exterior networks of electrical and runway lighting systems of
an airport. Work is performed in
accordance with specifications and standards set by the Federal Aviation Agency,
National Electric Code and accepted trade practices. Supervision is exercised over the Assistant
Airport Lighting Specialist and/or lower level maintenance mechanics.
Assignments are received from the Airport Manager or other administrator who
reviews work by means of reports and conformance with aviation
regulations. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Supervises and participates in the inspection and
maintenance of runway regulators for such lighting systems as runway lighting,
threshold, wingout, roll bars, approach, strobe, MALSR systems, in-pavement lighting, taxiway
lighting, PAPI
and VASI NAVAID’s;
Supervises and maintains vault oil switches and related control wiring such as selector cabinets, pilot relays, series selector switches and relays;
Supervises lamp changes and the
cleaning of lens;
Supervises and participates in the
installation of distribution panels, outlets for light and power, panel
switches, fluorescent lighting, relays and thermostats;
Supervises and participates in the
installation of overhead and underground electrical systems;
Checks level of lighting and makes
necessary angle adjustments;
Checks wiring and equipment for
shorts and overloads including underground wiring in conduit and direct bury
cable for airfield lighting;
Checks various lighting systems with
the use of electronic testing devices and makes necessary adjustments;
Erects and aligns poles, attaches
cross arms, brackets and braces;
Strings cutouts and splices wire and
cable;
Installs insulators, transformers,
voltage regulators, circuit breakers, switch boxes, cutouts and pot heads;
Troubleshoots and repairs air traffic
control
tower
grounding, electrical, generator auto transfer switch, and radio power issues;
Repairs motors, cleans commutators
and replaces fuses.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and theories of
electricity; thorough knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and
practices of the electrical trade, especially as they pertain to lighting
systems; thorough knowledge of aviation electrical specifications and standards
set by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Electric Code; good
knowledge of various airport lighting systems and their component parts, and
the methods used in the upkeep of them; good knowledge of the occupational
hazards and safety precautions of the electrical trade and of work with high
voltage; skill in the care and use of standard tools, equipment and testing
devices of the electrical trade; ability to troubleshoot, isolate and repair
defects involving high voltage circuits; ability to interpret and work from
electrical sketches and blueprints; ability to plan, direct and supervise the
work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; knowledge
of and ability to direct and supervise safe practices for working on airfield
and facility electric systems; ability to keep records and prepare reports;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior high school or
possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and five
(5) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of
airport electrical and lighting systems, including high voltage electrical
systems.
PROMOTIONAL
Two
(2) years of permanent competitive status as an Assistant Airport Lighting
Specialist.
