DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for supervising the laying out and controlling the work of a staff of skilled and semi skilled tradesmen engaged in a variety of maintenance and repair activities on airport owned buildings and grounds.  Although the majority of the incumbent's duties are of a supervisory nature, responsibility is also included for some performance of tradesman tasks.  Assignments are received from an Administrative superior in the form of maintenance and repair projects to be completed and time schedules to be adhered to.  Work is reviewed through conferences and reports submitted.  Performs related work as required

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assigns, lays out and supervises the work of skilled and semi-skilled tradesmen in the maintenance of airport owned buildings and grounds;

            Plans, assigns and supervises the seeding and mowing of lawns; raking of leaves; and the removal of snow and ice from pedestrian areas surrounding buildings;

            Supervises and assigns the work of trades and custodial workers engaged in repairing and maintaining airport owned buildings and facilities;

            Assigns work priorities to meet schedules and makes recommendations as to the operation and maintenance of all buildings and grounds; inspects work during progress and upon completion and submits reports on work progress;

            Maintains time, supplies, and equipment records; prepares request estimates for men, equipment and supplies.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of buildings and grounds operation and maintenance practices; thorough knowledge of the basic principles and methods of the mechanical trades including plumbing, painting, plastering, masonry, and carpentry; thorough knowledge of the tools, terminology and practices of the mechanical and construction and grounds maintenance trades; good knowledge of the necessary precautions inherent in the building, grounds and maintenance trades; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinate skilled and semi-skilled tradesmen in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish time, material and labor cost estimates and coordinate them in efficient project completion; ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction and to interpret simple blueprints and sketches; ability to maintain records and to prepare time and progress reports.        

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school and seven years of experience in the performance and/or supervision of airport maintenance activities.
