DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for supervising the operations of custodial workers in both secure and non-secure areas of Islip MacArthur Airport. The incumbent oversees the training and evaluation of all airport custodial personnel and ensures compliance with any related Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Rules and Regulations. The work requires the exercise of independent judgment and initiative and is reviewed through conferences, written reports and instructions on special assignments. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises the operations of all custodial workers in both secure and non-secure areas of the airport terminal building as determined by the TSA, and ensures compliance with TSA and FAA Airport Rules and Regulations;

            Trains and evaluates custodial personnel and maintains all personnel records;

            Oversees all aspects of custodial duties including stripping and finishing floors, carpet cleaning and extraction, office and public area cleaning, bathroom disinfection, sidewalk maintenance, and cleaning of outside building and windows;

            Schedules work around flight schedules to minimize passenger and tenant inconvenience;

            Purchases both capital and operational custodial items;

            Communicates with custodial, airport administration, security and emergency personnel utilizing a multiple frequency 2-way radio;

            Supervises and participates in snow removal in compliance with FAA Part 139 Rules and Regulations;

            Participates in maintaining the Airport Emergency Plan as it relates to the airport terminal building;

            Identifies hazardous material in and around the terminal building and properly notifies security and emergency personnel.

             

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods and practices used in large scale cleaning of buildings; thorough knowledge of airport rules and procedures as determined by the TSA  and FAA; good knowledge of airport field operations and procedures for working with FAA  control tower over 2-way radio; ability to identify hazardous material in and around the terminal building; ability to quickly organize equipment and personnel by request of security or emergency personnel during an emergency situation; ability to train and supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to analyze data and make decisions; ability to keep records and maintain reports; physical condition commen­surate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and eight (8) years of experience cleaning a private or municipal building, three (3) of which must have been at a commercial airport.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent status as a Custodial Worker III.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At time of appointment, candidate is required to possess a valid New York State driver's license, and license must be maintained through­out employment in this title. Within one year of appointment, candidate must successfully obtain certification as a Hazardous Materials first responder, and must maintain such certification throughout employment in this title.
