DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for assisting in planning and supervising the overall activities of Islip MacArthur Airport.  The incumbent assists the Islip MacArthur Airport Manager in establishing policies and procedures to operate the airport within applicable laws, rules and regulations. General supervision is received from the Islip MacArthur Airport Manager through personal consultation, written reports and through instructions on special assignments. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Assists in the planning and supervision of work programs related to the care, operation and protection of all projects and properties of the airport, in conformance with the general policies and standards set by the Town Commissioner of Aviation and Transportation and by other applicable laws and regulations;

         Assists in coordinating airport operations with representatives of commercial airlines;

         Assists in negotiations of major contracts, leases and agreements for rental of real and personal property, owned and operated by the airport;

         Assists in planning and directing the maintenance and repair of hangars, auxiliary buildings, runways, roads and other construction work at the airport;

         Assists in coordinating between Airport Management and airport facilities such as restaurants, shops, rental car agencies and other vendors;

         Assists in planning and supervising the proper storage of planes and adequate protection of airport properties;

         Assists in the preparation and maintenance of all account keeping, cost analysis, inventory and related business management records and reports;

         Conducts correspondence; prepares news releases; addresses civic groups and otherwise assists in carrying out the public relations program for the airport;

         Assists in supervision of the maintenance and distribution of accurate and up-to-date information concerning the weather, nearby associated facilities and other data affecting air traffic.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of standard record-keeping practices as related to airport operations; some knowledge of airport maintenance and construction work, and of the supplies, materials and equipment used in such work; some knowledge of federal, state and local rules and regulations applicable to airport traffic control and airport management; ability to plan, assign and direct the work of a large staff of employees performing diversified maintenance and operational functions in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with persons using the airport and operating its concessions; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the  position.

        

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         (A) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Aviation Management, and four (4) years of experience in an administrative capacity at a commercial airport, with responsibility for directing and coordinating various operations; or,

         (B) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and six (6) years of experience in an administrative capacity at a commercial airport, with responsibility for directing and coordinating various operations; or,

         (C) An equivalent combination of the above education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

        

         PROMOTIONAL

         Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an Airport Administrative Supervisor or Airport Operations Supervisor.
