DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for coordinating a special events program for the Town of Islip’s Department of Aviation and Transportation.  The employee exercises a moderate amount of independent judgment and initiative in the performance of duties.  Assignments are received from an administrative supervisor. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed through conferences and written reports.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Coordinates various public information functions to advance public knowledge of Long Island MacArthur Airport and the Bayport Aerodrome;

            Coordinates special events at the airport and the aerodrome and ensures conformance with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations and air carrier/airport Federal Aviation Administration Regulations Part 139;

            Negotiates, drafts and administers contracts pertaining to special events under the supervision and review of the Commissioner;

            Coordinates airport public relations activities with the Supervisor’s Office;

            Serves as liaison with production companies, elected officials, advertising companies and department heads regarding special events and advertising campaigns;

            Provides required TSA orientation pertaining to the Security Identification Display Area for new airport employees who will need access to secure areas;

            May develop and write various booklets, pamphlets and brochures to stimulate a greater public awareness of the airport’s services;

            Receives and responds to public inquiries and may speak on behalf of the department;

            Assesses public reaction to the policies, services and activities of the airport and responds orally and in writing to public inquiries;

            Maintains close contact with others in public relations areas to further promote the work of the department.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERITICS

Good knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices involved in the field of public event coordination, public relations and advertising; good knowledge of practices and techniques of contract negotiation and administration; good knowledge of TSA regulations and air carrier/airport Federal Aviation Administration Regulations Part 139; good knowledge of FEMA emergency management procedures; ability to ac­quire a good knowledge of the programs and services conducted by the department; ability to develop the most effective approaches to the unique problems of a public service organization; ability to effectively communicate on VHF and UHF radio frequencies during normal and emergency airport operation; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with public officials, airport personnel and tenants, and the general public; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical conditions commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation with a Bachelor’s Degree from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State and  two (2) years of experience in public relations, advertising, marketing or public event coordination, at least one (1) year of which must be at an air carrier/airport certified for operation under Part 139 of Federal Airport Regulations.

 

            NOTE: Additional experience may be substituted for education on a year-by-year basis, up to a maximum of four (4) years.
