DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under supervision, an employee in this
class is responsible for performing field, office and laboratory work in
relation to vector control. The incumbent mixes chemicals used for mosquito
extermination, collects, examines and classifies mosquitoes, maintains supplies
and equipment, maintains inventory control, compiles data, and prepares
reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Tabulates information on the areas sprayed for mosquitoes, and on the
density and distribution of mosquito populations;
Mixes chemicals in the proper proportions to obtain the most effective insecticide for mosquito extermination;
Provides for the proper storage of chemicals;
Collects mosquito specimens and performs microscopic identifications;
Sets out and services mosquito traps;
Compiles statistical data and prepares graphic presentations;
Maintains laboratory animals and mosquito colonies;
Maintains inventory control of equipment and supplies.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of entomological
principles, practices and techniques as applied to mosquito surveillance and
identification; good knowledge of field and laboratory equipment and supplies;
good knowledge of the use and storage characteristics of the materials typical
of the area of assignment; good knowledge of inventory methods and procedures;
working knowledge of laws, rules and regulations relating to mosquito control
work; some knowledge of the chemicals used for mosquito insecticides and of the
recommended formulas for mixing them; ability to operate and maintain standard
microscopes and other laboratory equipment; ability to identify mosquito larvae
and adults microscopically; ability to maintain laboratory animals and mosquito
colonies; ability to observe proper precautionary measures in handling
dangerous chemicals; ability to make varied arithmetic calculations with speed
and accuracy; ability to maintain inventory and storage records; ability to
prepare detailed reports and present them in a clear and concise manner;
ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to
follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State with an Associate's Degree in biology or a related
field; or,
b) Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and two (2) years of experience in mosquito control or in biological laboratory
work; or,
c) An equivalent combination
of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
PROMOTIONAL
Possession of a
current Category 8 Pesticide Applicator License issued by the New York State
Department of Environmental
Conservation and:
1.
Two (2) years of permanent competitive
status as a Vector Control Assistant; or
2. Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as
a Materiel Control Clerk II engaged in pesticide application in the Vector
Control Division of the Suffolk County Department of Public Works; or,
3. Two (2) years of experience as
an Automotive Equipment Operator engaged in pesticide application in the Vector
Control Division of the Suffolk County Department of Public Works, or in a Town
Highway Department.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Open Competitive
candidates
must obtain a Category 8 Pesticide Applicator License issued by the New York
State Department of Environmental Conservation within the first 26 weeks of
employment.
2. Candidates must
possess the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of
Motor Vehicles. The type of license
required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the
type of vehicle to be operated. License
must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
