DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for mixing chemicals in proper proportions to obtain the most effective insecticide for mosquito extermination.  The incumbent performs clerical and manual work in receiving, storing and issuing all the supplies and equipment of the department.  The incumbent receives general instructions concerning storekeeping functions and specific formulas for the mixing of insecticides.  Work is reviewed by a supervisor through inspection of storekeeping operations and by observation of effectiveness of insecticides used in controlling mosquitoes.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Receives chemical formulas; mixes chemicals in the proper proportions to obtain the most effective insecticide for mosquito extermination;

            Receives, stores and issues stock; maintains inventory control and other records of goods and supplies in the storeroom;

            Inspects quantity and quality of goods stored for general conformity to prescribed specifications; accepts or rejects goods as indicated; signs receipt for proper delivery of goods or obtainment of invoices.

            Prepares, and submits for approval, requisitions for stock replacements; keeps time records and prepares reports of activities;

            Follows up on requisitions through proper channels until merchandise is delivered or received;

            Develops efficient storage methods, including the allocation of proper bins of the storage spaces.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of storekeeping methods and procedures and of records used in receipt, storage and issuance of diversified goods; good knowledge of the various kinds, grades, use and storage characteristics of the materials typical of the area of assignment; some knowledge of the chemicals used for mosquito insecticides, and of the recommended formulas for mixing them so as to have effective insecticides for mosquito control; ability to determine the quantity of goods received in relation to prescribed specifications; ability to make varied arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy; ability to observe proper precautionary measures in handling dangerous chemicals; ability to carryout all written instructions and to manage routine operations; ability to maintain varied inventory and storage records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.        

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

           

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Candidates must obtain a Category 8 Pesticide Applicator License issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation within the first 26 weeks of employment.
  2. Candidates must possess the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.  The type of license required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated.  License must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
