DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class supervises the field operations of a program of identification, inspection and extermination of mosquitoes in the County.  Work is carried out in accordance with established entomological techniques and administrative procedures.  Supervision is exercised over a substantial number of personnel engaged in the prevention and extermination operations in upland and salt marsh areas.  Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor, and is reviewed for adherence to control standards and administrative policies.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises work of vector control crews engaged in maintaining and reconditioning upland and salt marsh areas;

            Inspects breeding places and drainage installations to determine effectiveness of mosquito control measures;

            Makes decisions regarding personnel, equipment and materials necessary for vector control activities;

            Supervises the selection, formulation and application of insecticides to prevent damage to plant and animal life;

            Investigates or assigns personnel to make investigations of all public complaints;

            Submits reports of findings and recommendations for action to supervisor;

            Reviews and verifies time and activity reports of Vector control crews;

            Prepares and submits programs, reports and yearly estimates for budget purposes;

            May operate motor equipment, including a small boat used for inspecting mosquito control activities.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations relating to mosquito control; good knowledge of entomological principles, practices and techniques as applied to the identification ad control of larval and adult mosquitoes; ability to plan, supervise and direct the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to secure facts through investigation and inspection; ability to prepare oral and written reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in one of the natural sciences, and five (5) years of experience in the oversight and planning of a nuisance insect control program, at least (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

 

NOTE: Relevant additional experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.   

           

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Candidates must have a Category 8 Pesticide Applicator License issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation at the time of employment.
  2. Candidates must possess the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.  The type of license required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated.  License must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
