DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is engaged in a study of mosquito and gnat biology, and control methods for the purpose of developing effective and safe control of these insects.  Work involves performing research on the life cycle and habits of possible bearers of eastern equine encephalitis on Long Island.  Field and laboratory studies conducted include observation, collection of specimens, testing for viruses, and studies of controls and recording of data.  Work is performed under the general supervision of assigned administrative personnel; and is periodically reviewed for the achievement of desired results.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Gathers various species of insects by light trap collection, resting box collection and biting collection;

            Gathers larvae and pupae by dipping, flotation techniques and Berlese funnel sampling;

            Maintains species integrity and continuity of colonies in laboratory environment;

            Studies biology, life cycle, feeding habits, host preference, reproductive frequency, longevity and flight range of mosquitoes;

            Sorts and identifies specimens in the field and prepares them for permanent collections;

            Tests suspected species for presence and transmission of viruses;

            Evaluates the effectiveness and safety of control methods currently in use or suggested, including pesticides, chemicals and species displacement;

            Develops effective and safe control procedures for specific field problems, such as Long Island duck farms.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of modern research laboratory methods, procedures and equipment; good knowledge of biology and entomology; skill in laboratory techniques; ability to perform analyses and tests and draw accurate conclusions on test results; ability to do comprehensive research work, exercising a high degree of judgment and initiative; ability to prepare technical reports on research results; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
