DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for directing the work of a number of supervisory custodians assigned to various school district buildings. Work involves planning, supervising and reviewing the Spanish speaking employees. The incumbent performs similar duties to those of a School Custodial Supervisor with the additional responsibility of communicating with employees who speak Spanish. The incumbent is responsible for supervising custodial workers engaged in cleaning activities only, and does not supervise workers involved in maintenance activities. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor, and is reviewed through conferences and the submission of required written reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Sets
up work schedules for the custodial staff and authorizes overtime assignments;
Communicates various supervisory instructions in Spanish to members of the custodial staff who have a limited or no English vocabulary;
Assists supervisory custodians in resolving
personnel problems;
Reassigns custodial staff as necessary to meet the varying manpower requirements occasioned by the use of schools by various community groups and by extra-curricular student groups;
Inspects school building to assure that good levels of cleanliness and orderliness are being maintained;
May
prepare and control the annual budget for the housekeeping function.

institute and supervise custodial training programs;
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the materials and methods used in large scale building cleaning;
good knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques; ability to
speak and understand both Spanish and English fluently; ability to maintain
records and prepare reports; ability to accurately estimate manpower requirements
in accordance with varying school programs and schedules; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a standard senior high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, five (5) years of
experience in the supervision of custodial and/or building maintenance
functions; or,
b) Nine (9) years of experience in the
supervision of custodial and/or building maintenance functions.
NOTE: Relevant additional
education from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State will be substituted
for the above experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four (4)
years.
PROMOTIONAL
One (1) year of permanent competitive status
as a Chief Custodian.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
There
will be a qualifying Spanish language examination.
