DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the administration and management of custodial services in a large town.  The incumbent directs and administers a comprehensive building cleaning program in town owned and operated buildings.  Supervision is exercised over a large number of custodial employees through intermediate supervisors.  Work is reviewed through conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Directs and administers a comprehensive building cleaning program in all town owned and operated buildings;

         Coordinates and directs supervisory and unskilled personnel engaged in providing custodial services;

         Interviews, selects, assign, schedules and evaluates all custodial employees;

         Prepares and submits capital and operating budgets; maintains control over funds;

         Directs the maintenance of a central supply stockroom;

         May maintain adequate supplies of fuel oil in all buildings.

        

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials and equipment utilized in large scale custodial operations; thorough knowledge of effective supervisory methods and techniques; ability to coordinate the allocation of manpower, equipment and materials; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare comprehensive reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         Either:

         a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree, and four (4) years of experience in custodial functions, three (3) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or,

         b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of  a high school equivalency diploma, and six (6) years of experience in custodial functions, three (3) years of which must have been in supervisory capacity; or,

         c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
