DIETETIC
TECHNICIAN 8125
An employee in this class provides technical support and assistance in providing nutrition services to program participants. The incumbent may be responsible for monitoring a program at several different sites including home delivered programs and WIC programs. Work is performed under the direct supervision of an administrative supervisor. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Provides
technical support and assistance to professional nutritionists and dieticians;
Provides
services to women, infants and children on basic nutrition education based on information gained
through assessment of client needs;
Teaches
individual and/or group classes following lesson plans developed for nutrition
education and food service techniques by a dietician or nutritionist;
Evaluates
menus/food plans for nutritional adequacy;
Observes
and evaluates food service techniques;
Interviews
program participants and ensures that program mandates are met including taking
anthropometrical measurements and hematological values when required;
Maintains
and updates client records according to established rules and procedures.

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of
public health nutrition and dietetics; thorough knowledge of menu planning
techniques and methods; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; ability
to apply nutritional principles to the needs and requirements of program
participants; ability to supervise support personnel in a manner conducive to
full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with various agencies, organizations and residents of a
community, as well as co-workers and administrators; ability to follow and
issue oral and written instructions; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; good judgment; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by New York State with an Associate's Degree in
Dietetics or Nutrition and credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic
Registration as a Registered Dietetic Technician (DTR).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
For all employees hired after
9/26/14, Registration as a Registered Dietetic Technician (DTR) is required and
must be maintained throughout employment.
Depending upon assignment, a
candidate must satisfactorily complete the New York State required training
modules on WIC Program policies and procedures and attend State-approved
Competent Professional Authorities (CPA) training at the WIC Training Center
within six (6) months of appointment. These
candidates must also obtain continuing education hours relevant to WIC in order
to maintain employment.
Depending upon assignment,
candidates may be required to be credentialed by the Suffolk County Department
of Health Services’ Compliance Bureau Credentialing Committee, and maintain
this credential throughout employment in the assignment.
At the
time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees are
required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York
State.
