DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists in the interpretation of federal, state and local legislation affecting the elderly.  The incumbent is responsible for evaluating, monitoring and supervising County-wide nutrition, day care and recreation programs for Suffolk County senior citizens. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports and the attainment of desired objectives.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

               Assists in the interpretation of federal, state, and local legislation affecting the elderly;

               Supervises a staff responsible for monitoring countywide programs;

               Prepares budgets and grant applications for nutrition and day care programs;

               Implements and establishes new programs for the benefit and enrichment of Suffolk County senior citizens;

               Develops programming and events for general participation in County programs and for senior citizen residents of Suffolk County;

               Evaluates and supervises the nutrition, day care and recreation programs funded and sponsored by Suffolk County;

               Participates in meetings with all County and community agencies involved in services for the elderly;

               Conducts meetings for program managers and other professionals concerning senior citizens.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the social, economic, physical and psychological problems concerning senior citizens; thorough knowledge of programs and services as provided by the Older Americans Act (federal) and the Community Services for the Elderly Program (state); good knowledge of federal, state, local and private funding sources, requirements and other resources; good knowledge of public administration; good judgment; tact; courtesy; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with state and local officials, public and private agencies, support and supervisory staffs, general public and senior citizen groups; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

               OPEN COMPETITIVE

               Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and eight (8) years of experience in commercial or institutional food preparation, at least four (4) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

 

NOTE:   Additional education in hotel, restaurant or food service management will be substituted for non-supervisory experience.

 

               PROMOTIONAL

               Two (2) years permanent competitive status as a Food Service Supervisor.
