DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class operates laundry machinery and equipment, and performs related manual tasks in a municipal institution.  The work necessitates participation in several hand and machine operations such as washing, extracting, drying and ironing.  The work also requires frequent heavy lifting under hot, humid working conditions.  Under the continuous direct supervision of the Laundry Supervisor, the employee is responsible for maintaining established standards of cleanliness.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES           

            Operates washers, extractors, tumblers, automatic pressers and other laundry machines;

            Sorts, launders and irons linens and clothes, using hand or machine operations as directed;

            Lubricates and makes minor adjustments to machinery and equipment;

            Folds and sorts laundered items;

            Maintains work area in clean condition.

           

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of common laundry appliances and equipment; ability to operate one or more kinds of laundry machinery or equipment; ability to understand and follow oral instructions; ability to do heavy lifting; ability to work long hours while standing, and to do so under hot and humid conditions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
