DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs skilled and routine duties in the design, construction, alteration and repair of garments, uniforms and other assorted fabric goods.  Independent judgment and initiative are required to solve the more complex problems.  Normal workflow is directed to and from the incumbent; and any significant deviation in work routine would be referred to a supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Designs and constructs a variety of fabric goods ranging from dresses, pants and tops to drapes, shower curtains and wheel chair covers;

          Tailors and alters garments including suits, dresses and uniform apparel;

          Designs and constructs custom surgical supplies such as restraints, discs and hernia patches;

          Mends by hand and/or machine goods requiring repairs such as zippers, buttons or elastic replacements;

          Finishes garments and uniforms with proper braiding, patches and identifying markings;

          Takes measurements for fitting garments such as pants, jackets, hats, shoes and shirts;

          Reupholsters chairs and makes seat cushions;

          Consults with supervisor about problem cases, designs and executes course of action to alleviate problem situations;

          Maintains simple records on work to be performed and completed.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the techniques used in designing, constructing, altering and maintaining a variety of fabric and leather goods; good knowledge of the qualities and serviceability of a variety of materials; skill in the operation and maintenance of power machines, including straight stitch, blind stitch, post machine, heavy duty leather machine and professional steam presser; skill in repairing, mending and sewing articles by hand; ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in a problem solving situation; ability to follow mildly complex oral and written instructions; ability to maintain simple records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

                                     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Three (3) years of paid experience operating a variety of power sewing machines; one (1) year of which must have involved fitting and altering garments.
