DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs skilled work measuring, fitting, altering and repairing uniforms, uniform accessories and civilian clothes for members of the Suffolk County Police Department and the School Crossing Guards.  The work involves the examination of fabric samples and advising on which are most suitable for uniforms.  Minor and extensive repairs are made on uniforms, and the incumbent installs insignias, chevrons, braids and zippers.  The incumbent works under police staff supervision.  Supervision may be exercised over Needle Trades Specialists.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Measures, fits, alters and maintains all uniforms and related accessories, installs insignias, chevrons, braids and zippers when necessary;

          Develops patterns and alterations for specific uniform needs;

          Operates professional sewing machines such as straight stitch power machine, heavy duty leather machine, post machine, blind stitch machine and a professional steam presser;

          Cleans, oils, maintains and makes minor repairs and adjustments on all shop machines;

          Consults in the preparation of uniform specifications, selection of fabrics and the examination of all submitted samples by various vendors;

          Maintains an inventory of all supplies needed to operate a full service tailor shop;

          Maintains accurate records and files of all work received and completed.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of tailoring techniques, and the operation of professional shop equipment; thorough knowledge of custom measuring of males and females; good knowledge of fabric qualities and properties; ability to maintain, repair and update professional shop equipment; ability to measure people and properly fit them; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

     Either:

          (a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Apparel Production Management, Fashion Apparel Illustration, Fashion Merchandising or a related field, and two (2) years of commercial tailoring experience; or,

          (b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of commercial tailoring experience; or,

          (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
