DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists the Town Commissioner of Public Safety Enforcement in the overall administration, planning and coordination of programs and operations of the Department. The Chief Deputy acts for and in place of the Commissioner and is responsible for assisting in the supervision of subordinate personnel in their performance and adherence to regulations and policies set forth. In performing the duties of the position, the Chief Deputy exercises a considerable amount of independence of judgment and initiative.  Work is reviewed by the Commissioner and Town Board through conferences and reports.  Does related work as required.

                                                                                                                      

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES 

            Assists in planning, supervising and implementing the overall programs of the Department’s divisions of Code Enforcement, including the Fire Marshals’ Office, and the Traffic Violations Bureau and may serve as the head of a division;

            Assists in the supervision of the preparation, presentation and control of the Department’s annual budget and fiscal policies;

            Recommends departmental procedures, policies, regulations or ordinances to make a more effective operation;

            Consults with the Town Attorney on matters relating to summonses issued for violations of local laws;

            Assists in the supervision of personnel in their performance and adherence to regulations and policies and may be responsible for interviewing, hiring and disciplining personnel.

Thorough knowledge of the overall programs, functions, activities, policies, and regulations of the Department; thorough knowledge of the principles of office management and supervision and their application; ability to gather, assemble and evaluate facts and evidence, and to arrive at sound and logical conclusions; ability to effectively delegate authority and to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to establish effective working relationships with civic leaders, public officials and the general public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
