An employee in this class
assists the Town Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Sports, and Cultural
Resources in the overall administration, planning, and coordination of the
programs and operations of the Department.
The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the supervision of
subordinate personnel in their performance and adherence to Department
regulations and policies. The Deputy
acts for and in place of the Commissioner.
In performing the duties of the position, the Deputy Commissioner
exercises a considerable amount of independent judgment and initiative. The work is reviewed by the Commissioner
through conferences and reports. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assists in planning, supervising and
implementing the overall programs of Parks, Recreation and Sports, and Cultural
Resources;
Assists in the supervision of the
preparation, presentation and maintenance of the Department's annual budget and
fiscal policies;
Recommends departmental updating
procedures, policies, regulations or ordinances to provide a more effective
operation;
Maintains and operates the Town's
parks and recreational facilities;
Coordinates, plans and develops
recreational and cultural projects and programs for and on behalf of the Town
residents in cooperation with other municipalities, community associations,
local organizations and private citizens;
Provides and promotes programs which
meet the needs of senior citizens, handicapped individuals and disadvantaged
youth;
Develops and coordinates data
gathering procedures and departmental studies, analyzing the results for
potential policy, regulation and ordinance revision or development.

Thorough
knowledge of Federal, State and local laws and regulations relating to areas
of Departmental concern; thorough knowledge of the overall programs,
functions, activities, policies and regulations of the Department; thorough
knowledge of the principles of office management and supervision and their application;
ability to gather, assemble and evaluate facts and to arrive at sound and
logical conclusions; ability to effectively delegate authority and to plan and
supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to establish effective working relationships with civic
leaders, public officials and the general public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
