DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists the Town Commissioner in the overall administration, planning, and coordinating of programs of the Department's various divisions.  The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the supervi­sion of subordinate personnel in their performance and adherence to regulations and policies set forth.  The Deputy acts for and in place of the Commissioner.  In performing the duties of the position, the incumbent exercises a considerable amount of independence of judgment and initiative.  Work is reviewed by the Commissioner and Town Board through conferences and reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in planning, supervising and implementing the overall programs of the divisions of Engineering, Environmental Protec­tion, Land Management, Planning and Traffic Safety; and, may serve as the head of a division;

            Assists in the supervision of the preparation, presentation, and control of the Department's annual budget and fiscal policies;

            Assists in preparing, updating and implementing the Town's comprehensive plan, programs, and developmental policies in order to provide for the orderly growth of the Town;

            Supervises, implements, and directs all matters related to the office of the Board of Appeals and the Planning Board;

            Holds hearings on matters relating to the conservation and protection of the environment and natural resources of the Town;

            Assists in directing the preparation and presentation of reports regarding available industrial property, labor force, transportation facilities, financ­ing, and other pertinent commercial and industrial data.

Thorough knowledge of the overall programs, function, activities, policies and regulations of each of the Department's divisions; thorough knowledge of the principles of office management and supervision, and the application thereof; ability to gather, assemble and evaluate facts and evidence, and to arrive at sound and logical conclusions; ability to promote and maintain good public relations with public officials and the business community; ability to delegate authority and to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and con­cisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

There are no minimum qualifications for this position since it is in the Exempt classification.
