DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists the Commissioner in the overall adminis­tration, planning and coordination of programs and operations of the Department.  The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the supervision of subordinate personnel in their performance and adherence to regulations and policies set forth.  The Deputy acts for and in place of the Commissioner.  In performing the duties of the position, the Deputy exercises a considerable amount of indepen­dence of judgment and initiative.  The work is reviewed by the Commissioner and Town Board through conferences and reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists in planning, supervising, and implementing the overall programs of the Department's divisions of Finance and Data Processing;

          Assists the Commissioner in planning, developing and administering all departmental activities including budgeting, funding sources and allocations, appropriations and overall fiscal management;

          Oversees the maintenance of the Town's financial records;

          Recommends departmental updating procedures, policies, regulations or ordinances to make a more effective operation;

          Supervises all personnel in the divisions of the Department and may be responsible for interviewing, hiring and disciplining personnel.

Thorough knowledge of the overall programs, functions, activities, policies and regulations of the Department; thorough knowledge of the principles of office management and supervision and their application; ability to gather, assemble and evaluate facts and evidence, and to arrive at sound and logical conclusions; ability to effectively delegate authority and to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, ability to establish effective working relationships with civic leaders, public officials and the general public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

There are no minimum qualifications for this position; it is in the Exempt class.
