DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists the Town Director of Planning and Environment in supervising the overall administration, planning and coordination of programs of the Department’s various divisions. The incumbent assists the Director in supervising subordinate personnel in their performance and adherence to regulations and policies set forth. The Deputy acts for and in place of the Director. Supervision is exercised over a staff of professional, technical and clerical personnel.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Town Director of Planning and Environment and is reviewed through conferences and written reports.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists in planning, supervising and implementing the overall programs of the Planning, Environmental Review, Engineering Site Plan Review and Land Management divisions;

          Assists in planning, organizing and directing the activities of a staff of professional, technical and clerical personnel engaged in compiling, analyzing, evaluating and interpreting data pertaining to planning and environmental studies;

          Assists in administering the enforcement of planning and environmental programs, policies and ordinances adopted by the town;

          Assists in preparing comprehensive reports of departmental activity as well as reports reflecting the impact of planning and environmental studies;

          Assists in serving as technical advisor to the Town Board and representing the Town Board on contacts with other jurisdictions, departments and commissions on matters concerning planning and the environment;

          Assists in preparing the annual budget for approval of the Town Board.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the overall programs, functions, activities, policies and regulations of each of the Department’s divisions; thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of community, regional and environmental planning; thorough knowledge of current literature, recent developments, and other sources of information in public planning and environmental protection; thorough knowledge of those aspects of civil engineering, economics, public finance, sociology, architecture and environmen­tal concerns which impact on town planning; thorough knowledge of statistical concepts and methods; ability to plan, supervise and review the work of a professional and technical staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with civic leaders, public officials, and the general public; ability to conduct planning studies and formulate recommendations for planning and environmental standards in the development of overall town plans; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensu­rate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This is an Exempt position; therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.
