DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direction of the Commissioner of Police, an employee in this class is responsible for coordinating and overseeing public information activities of the Suffolk County Police Department.  The incumbent serves as spokesperson and primary contact for media outlets such as newspapers, magazines, television and radio and as liaison between the Commissioner’s Office and the Department’s precincts and internal commands.  Supervision is exercised over a civilian public information staff.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Coordinates public information events and responses to the many inquiries received daily by the Police Department;

            Identifies key issues and accomplishments of the Police Department and drafts related press releases and publicity material;

            Oversees public events, seminars, forums, town hall meetings, exhibitions, and community group and civic association meetings;

            Directs and participates in creating brochures, flyers, pamphlets, mailings and departmental communications;

            Creates and implements awareness campaigns for internal and external audiences on relevant and important issues to the Police Department.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices involved in the field of public relations; good knowledge of the functions and operations of the County Police Department; ability to prepare news items and other public statements, arrange press conferences and process and draft official correspondence; ability to exercise sound judgment in responding to inquiries concerning matters of public safety; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with police personnel; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to supervise and review the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Political Science, Public Administration, Advertising or Liberal Arts, and eight (8) years of administrative experience in public relations and communications, at least four (4) years of which were for a municipality or major municipal department.
