DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for performing confidential tasks associated with the administration and operation of the Office of the County Clerk.  The incumbent is expected to exercise a considerable degree of independent judgment, initiative and discretion in the performance of assigned duties.  Supervision is exercised over a clerical support staff.  A major emphasis of the position is on the confidential nature of the work involved.  The incumbent reports directly to the County Clerk, who reviews work through conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists in developing personnel policy;

          Coordinates the administrative duties and functions of the Office of the County Clerk;

          Consults with and advises County Clerk on matters concerning departmental operations and efficiency;

          Prepares correspondence, statistical reports, and reports on costs and progress;

          Assigns and supervises the work of a small clerical support staff.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques of office management and organization; good knowledge of the principles and procedures of public administration; good knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; good knowledge of modern office equipment, practices and procedures; ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; good judgment; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department and four years of experience as an executive secretary.

 

NOTE:  Education beyond high school from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for up to two years of the above experience.
