DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists the Commissioner in formulating and maintaining the policies and administrative procedures of the Department of Economic Development and Planning. The incumbent acts generally for and on behalf of the Commissioner and is involved in all operations of the Department.  Supervision is exercised over a staff of administrative, technical, and clerical personnel.  Work is performed under the direction of the Commissioner and is reviewed through consultations, conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists the Commissioner in establishing overall policy with regard to County economic development, planning and environment in fields such as small business, agriculture, farming, fisheries, sustainability, housing, transportation, and export/import economics;

            Directs research and analysis of available economic data and reviews specific development plans and strategies based upon that data;

            Provides administrative oversight of programs such as Affordable Housing, Land Acquisition, Suffolk Jumpstart, Community Development Block Grants, and START-UP NY;

            Directs preparation of the annual report of Department activities;

            May assist in preparing the annual Department budget.

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, policies, and practices of the Department of Economic Development and Planning operations; comprehensive knowledge of economics, public finance, and sociology as related to Department functions; good knowledge of recent developments and sources of information in the field of economic development and public planning; ability to plan, supervise, and review the work of professional and technical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with civic leaders, public officials and the general public; ability to express oneself clearly both orally and in writing; good judgement; tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in the exempt jurisdictional classification; therefore there are no minimum qualifications.
