DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for the
overall administration of the County’s Office of Business Development and
Innovation. The incumbent has
responsibility for establishing and executing the County’s Business Development
and Innovation strategy designed to attract new businesses, improve the
economic development climate for existing businesses, promote entrepreneurship,
and close the achievement gap in Suffolk County. The incumbent will develop
relationships with the business community, and public, private, and educational
sectors to determine the needs of the business community and cultivate innovative
ways to address them. Supervision is exercised over professional, technical and
clerical personnel. Work is reviewed through conferences and written reports. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Oversees
the Office of Business Development and Innovation;
Develops
and directs policies, procedures, and programs to improve economic development
in the County;
Assesses
the needs of the business community and collaborates with public, private, and
educational sectors to develop innovative solutions;
Provides
guidance to business owners on growth opportunities, best practices, equity and
inclusion initiatives, and relevant legislation;
Initiates
contacts with federal, state, local and private interests to promote potential
business resources within the County;
Prepares
Business Development and Innovation budget and tracks expenditures;
Works
with County departments, and public and private agencies to organize and
execute events, trade shows, and conferences;
Assist
with the County’s international trade initiatives and Foreign Direct Investment
efforts.

Comprehensive knowledge of modern business and public
administration procedures; thorough knowledge of the land, labor,
and financial resources of Suffolk County and their influence in attracting
business and industry; thorough knowledge of methods and techniques used in the
promotion of local business development and relocation; ability to promote and
maintain good public relations with public officials, private institutions and
agencies, and the business community;
ability to analyze facts and to exercise sound judgment in arriving at
conclusions; ability to plan, supervise and
review the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high
morale; ability to prepare comprehensive reports, statistical analyses, and
promotional presentations and to convincingly present them to business
professionals and government officials; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State with a Master’s Degree
in Business Administration, Public Administration, Marketing, Finance,
Economics, or a related field, plus four (4) years of administrative-level
experience in the areas of business development and innovation or economic
development;
(b)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree
in Business Administration, Marketing, Finance, Economics, or a related
field, plus six (6) years of administrative-level experience in the areas of
business development and innovation or economic development;
(c) An equivalent combination of education and
experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
