DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class, in accordance with the Suffolk County Charter, acts generally for and in place of the Commissioner of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services, and assists the Commissioner in the administration and supervision of the department.  The Deputy Commissioner represents the Commissioner at public forums and activities as required.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Commissioner, and is reviewed through conference and reports.  Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in the administration and supervision of the operations of the various units within the Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services;

            Assists in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures;

            Assists in the development of the departmental budget;

            Assists in staffing decisions and with the supervision of personnel matters for the department;

            Represents the Commissioner at meetings, public forums, and other activities as required.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the methods and techniques of office management and organization; thorough knowledge of the principals and practices of personnel administration; good knowledge of regulatory codes that apply to Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services; ability to direct the work of subordinate employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to develop, implement and enforce departmental policies and procedures; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with Federal, State and County agencies and the general public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This title is in the Exempt jurisdictional class and, therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.
