DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class plans and directs a coordinated program of identification, inspection and extermination of mosquitoes in the County. Work is performed in accordance with established entomological techniques. Supervision is exercised through supervisors over a large number of personnel engaged in mosquito control operations throughout the County. Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor by observation of the effectiveness of the program. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Develops,
organizes and directs programs of mosquito control for the entire County;
establishes procedures and prescribes control methods and techniques to govern
the operation and implementation of the program;
Supervises
and evaluates staff performance for technical adequacy, adherence to schedules
and fulfillment of program objective;
Exercises
administrative control over the maintenance and repair of vehicles and spray
equipment; designs special mechanical equipment and adapts stock mechanical
equipment for mosquito control needs; prepares specification for the purchase
of equipment as necessary;
Conducts
research program for control of mosquitoes; develops insecticides and
determines methods of application for effective use;
Designs
drainage systems and tide control structures;
Supervises
the keeping of records, annual budget and departmental reports;
Directs
the public relations work of the division; makes speeches and attends civic
meetings and functions as a representative of the division.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive knowledge of principles, methods and
techniques of mosquito control; comprehensive knowledge of entomological
principles, practices and techniques as applied to the control of larval and
adult mosquitoes; thorough knowledge of laws, rules and regulations effective
in the County relating to mosquito control; ability to plan, supervise and
direct the work of a large number of personnel in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to design or modify equipment and develop
mosquito control measures; ability to make oral and written reports; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State with a Bachelor's
Degree in one of the natural sciences, and seven (7) years of experience in the
research and control of nuisance insects, at least (2) years of which must have
been in a supervisory capacity.
NOTE: Relevant additional education will be
substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2)
years of permanent competitive status as a Chief Environmental Analyst in the
Suffolk County Department of Public Works Vector Control Division.
