DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs highly responsible
work in assisting the Commissioner of Parks, Recreation & Conservation in
the overall administration of the department. Responsibilities include
overseeing the day-to-day functioning of the Commissioner's office, liaison
with other departments and agencies, and gathering information or materials for
the preparation of reports. The work, under the general supervision of the
Commissioner, requires the exercise of independent judgment and initiative and
is reviewed through periodic conferences and reports. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Coordinates
the administrative duties and functions of the Department of Parks, Recreation
& Conservation;
Assists
in the preparation of the capital budget;
Acts as
liaison between the Commissioner and other departments and municipal agencies;
Responds
to inquiries from the general public regarding departmental policies and
regulations;
Represents
the Commissioner at a variety of meetings;
Coordinates
and participates in the work for special departmental projects.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of modern management and administrative
principles and practices; thorough knowledge of the policies and programs of
the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation & Conservation; good
knowledge of the methods and techniques of budget and report preparation;
ability to gather information and to prepare clear, accurate and comprehensive
reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in
writing; ability to establish effective working relationships with department
employees and officials of other agencies and departments; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
a) Graduation
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY
State with a Bachelor's Degree, and three (3) years of administrative
experience; or,
b) Graduation from a standard senior high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and seven (7) years
of administrative experience.
