DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for assisting the Commissioner of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation in the formulation of administrative policies and procedures for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation.  At all times, the Chief Deputy Commissioner acts for and in place of the Commissioner and is involved in all operations of the Department.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Commissioner and is reviewed through consultations, conferences, and written reports.  General supervision is exercised over a subordinate staff of professional, clerical, and labor personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES    

            Assists the Commissioner in establishing recreational facilities and programs;

            Assists the Commissioner in directing and supervising the maintenance and operation of all County parks;

            Assists the Commissioner in organizing and promoting recreational activities in the County and supplementing the recreational activities of the towns and villages throughout the County;

            Assists in preparing the annual report of department activities;

            Assists in preparing the annual department budget;

            May assist in the preparation of recommendations to the County Legislature for purchase of real estate for park use.        

           

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal park and recreation management and operations; thorough knowledge of laws and other regulatory enactments controlling municipal parks and recreation facilities; thorough knowledge of modern administration practices; thorough knowledge of modern developments in recreational and conservation programs; good knowledge of budgetary principles; ability to implement recreational and conservation programs; ability to supervise directly and indirectly a large staff of subordinate personnel; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to tactfully deal with the public and persons in high level administrative positions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This is an exempt position; therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.
