DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class assists the Village Clerk in the administration of the operations of the department. The incumbent acts for, and in place of, the Village Clerk. The incumbent is responsible for supervising a large clerical support staff; and is expected to exercise a considerable amount of independent judgment and initiative. Work is reviewed by the Village Clerk through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Acts for, and in place of, the Village Clerk at meetings and conferences;

            Prepares agenda for Village Board meetings;

            Supervises a large clerical support staff; determines work assignments;

            Testifies on behalf of the Village in court proceedings; prepares standard legal notices, and arranges for their publication;

            Issues dog, marriage, hunting and fishing licenses, birth and death certificates, and all other Village permits;

            Maintains a number and variety of files and records; trains employees in the maintenance of these files and records;

            Interviews and hires personnel; directs the preparation and maintenance of personnel and payroll records.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of the principles of office management and supervision and the ability to apply this

knowledge; some knowledge of clerical and record keeping procedures; ability to plan, assign and supervise

the work of a large staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to develop

effective office practices and training programs; ability to acquire knowledge of the legal, administrative and procedural regulations applicable to the department; ability to promote and maintain effective inter-

departmental and public relations; ability to maintain accurate and complete records and to prepare reports;

ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate

with the demands of the position.

           

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in the Exempt class; and therefore, there are no minimum qualifications.
