DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class assists in the overall administration of a large division of the

Probation Department.  The incumbent exercises a considerable amount of independent judgment and initiative in the performance of his duties.  An Assistant Director, under the direction of the Deputy Director, has responsibility for the work of a number of Principal Probation Officers.  This work requires either directly or indirectly planning, directing and coordinating work of subordinate probation units.  The incumbent also acts as an administrative liaison between judges and the Probation Department.  Supervision is received through conferences and written reports from higher ranking administrative personnel.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Assists the Deputy Director of Probation in planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the activities of a division such as the Family Court Division;

         Assists the Deputy Director of Probation in the formulation and implementation of departmental policies and procedures;

         Assists in interpreting policy directives, laws, rules and regulations pertaining to probation work to insure operational consistency;

         Oversees the type and quality of work performed by the Principal Probation Officers and their subordinates;

         Confers with judicial and non-judicial personnel of the courts, police, prosecutors, education and social service personnel and related groups and individuals on matters of common interest;

         Performs specific assignments in the area of development and coordination of programs with public and private agencies directed toward the control and prevention of delinquent and criminal behavior.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to probation work; comprehensive knowledge of the functions and procedures of the courts involved with the work of the department; comprehensive knowledge of principles underlying human behavior, growth an development; comprehensive knowledge of investigating, interviewing, case recording and report preparation techniques as applied to probation work; comprehensive knowledge of modern administration principles and practices; comprehensive knowledge of current trends and developments in the fields of probation and correction; ability to establish and maintain effective public relations; ability to deal effectively with people under emotional strain; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to supervise a large staff in a manner conducive to high performance and good morale.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

(a)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and eight years professional experience in a probation agency, four years of which must have been in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity; or,

(b)  One year permanent status, as a Principal Probation Officer; or

(c)  One year permanent status as Assistant to the Director (Probation).

        

NOTE:  Relevant additional education will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
