DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing and directing programs to promote and enhance the County’s agriculture, agritourism and fisheries industries. The employee utilizes considerable resourcefulness preparing and reviewing initiatives to publicize and expand these industries.  Supervision may be exercised over personnel.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Commissioner of Economic Development and Planning and is reviewed through conferences and the submission of written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Develops programs to promote the Long Island agricultural brand locally and beyond;

            Interacts with key groups and stakeholders to determine needs and present conditions of the involved industries, and works to develop strategies to address those issues;

            Works to attract and retain new professionals to the industries within the responsibility area;

            Consults and works in conjunction with other levels of government to eliminate obstacles to the continued growth of these industries and to enhance their development;  

            Produces appropriate reports on the condition of the assigned industries;

            Meets with various professional groups involved in these initiatives.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles and methods used in agricultural program development; good knowledge of current trends, sources of information and recent developments in the field which are of major concern to the agricultural industry; good knowledge of the principles and practices of public administra­tion; good knowledge of the methods and techniques of office management and organi­zation; ability to plan and direct programs stimulating agriculture and agritourism in the County; ability to prepare literature which publicizes the programs of the department; ability to conduct research and write reports; ability to create strategies and solutions to industry issues; ability to plan, assign and supervise and review the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and private agencies, the general public, department heads, and co-workers; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; good judgment and tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            (a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by New York State with a Master's Degree, and two (2) years of experience in business administration, marketing, or public relations, one (1) year of which must have been in agriculture;

            (b) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by New York State with a Bachelor's Degree, and four (4) years of experience in business administration, marketing, or public relations, one (1) year of which must have been in agriculture; or,

            (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
