DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists the Director-Nursing Home in the administrative operation of the facility.  The incumbent exercises a key leadership role in directing the facility's operations in accordance with federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations.  Supervision is exercised over professional, clerical and maintenance staff.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Assists the Director-Nursing Home in establishing and directing the implementation of written policies and procedures that reflect the goals and objectives of the facility, including personnel policies, resident care policies, procedure manuals and job descriptions;

         Assists in recruiting, selecting and training competent department supervisors and other personnel;

         Interprets the facility's policies and procedures to personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and others affiliated with the facility, as directed by the Director-Nursing Home;

         Assists in maintaining a good public relations program that serves the best interest of the facility and community;

         Advises department supervisors concerning the operation of their departments, and other related areas, to assists in eliminating/correcting problem areas, and/or improvement of services;

         Assists in preparing an annual operating budget and assists in allocating the resources to carry out programs and activities of the facility;

         Serves on various committees of the facility as required by existing regulations and as appointed by the Director;

         When directed to, represents the facility in dealings with outside agencies, contractors;

         In the absence of the Director, assumes the authority, responsibility, and accountability of directing the facility's operation.      

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing home administration; thorough knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations which pertain to the operation of a skilled nursing facility in New York State; good knowledge of current developments, literature, and sources of information in the field of nursing home administration; ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of professional and support staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the staff, patients and patients' families; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to understand the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the aged, chronically ill, and disabled; ability to maintain accurate records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

                                                                                                                    

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and five (5) years of business management or administrative experience in a hospital, nursing home, or a related institution.

 

NOTE:   A Master's Degree in the health care field may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, the candidate must possess a license to practice as a Nursing Home Administrator in New York State.
