DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class administers the Health Services Department's patient care programs offered in County clinics, mobile units, the Suffolk County Nursing Home and the Suffolk County Jail as well as those provided by contract agencies.  The Director of Patient Care Services supervises the implementation of the component programs by their individual Directors.  The work is reviewed through conferences and written reports by the Commissioner of Health Services.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Formulates departmental policy to establish and maintain high quality patient care in County clinics and other units of County-operated medical care;

          Reviews and evaluates the quality of patient care services provided by contract agencies under County auspices;

          Maintains operational liaison with the New York State Department of Health, patient care agencies, patients and professional associations to improve the Health Services Department's ability to provide for the health needs of the County;

          Investigates potential funding sources and promotes granting of support for the establishment and extension of health services and emergency services not otherwise provided for.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the authority and responsibilities of the medical officer in charge of patient care in Suffolk County; comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of the Patient Care Division of the Department of Health Services; comprehensive knowledge of the New York State and Suffolk County sanitary codes; thorough knowledge of the principles and prac­tices of medicine; ability to establish and maintain effective working relation­ships with the staff, the public, public officials and professionals involved with Suffolk County's patient care programs; ability to plan and supervise the work of medical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to prepare clear and concise technical reports; physical condi­tion commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Either:

(a)     Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York and three years of experience in an administrative capacity; or,

(b)     Possession of a license to practice dentistry in the State of New York and three years of experience in an administrative capacity.
