DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for medical-legal work in assisting the Chief Medical Examiner in the administration of the County's Medical Examiner's office. Under general supervision, an employee in this class assists the Chief Medical Examiner in a wide variety of medical-legal administrative work, Responsibilities include acting in the absence of the Examiner in the exercise of various medical and legal functions and responsibilities in directing the activities of the department. Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Carries out assignments of the chief Medical Examiner;

          Trains subordinates in medical-legal work;

          Reviews and coordinates the work of medical, laboratory and investigatory personnel;

          Performs post mortem examinations in cases coming under jurisdiction of Medical Examiner Law;

          Evaluates laboratory reports on analysis of body tissues and fluid specimens to determine pathological conditions, medical evidence of criminal involvement, and establishment of cause of death;

          Furnishes law enforcement officials with evidence of a medical and scientific nature;

          Consults with specialists in fields such as chemistry, toxicology, bacteriology, immunology, law enforcement and other disciplines;

          Testifies in court trials and hearings.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, literature, and new developments in the field of pathological anatomy and forensic medicine; thorough knowledge of laws and regulations applying to deaths; ability to plan and supervise the work of a forensic pathology laboratory; ability to review and coordinate the work of the diversified professional, technical and investigatory units of the Medical Examiner's Office; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with associates, other governmental officials and the public; ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and two (2) years of full time experience in a Medical Examiner's or Coroner's Office.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Employees must be certified by the American Board of Pathology, or possess equivalent certification, in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology.
