DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for promoting the motion picture industry in Suffolk County, as well as promoting cultural tourism.  Responsibility is included for evaluating a variety of cultural activity groups which are being considered for grant funding.  Under direction, an employee in this class studies funding proposals from cultural organizations and makes recommendations as to whether they should be awarded grants and identifies federal grants to enhance the capability of arts organizations in the County. The employee travels extensively in the County discussing programs and evaluating activities.  The position also involves follow-up after grants are awarded to insure proper use of funds.  Does related work as required.        

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Examines funding proposals and discusses cultural programs with program officials and investigates cultural organizations to determine whether they have a valid claim for County assistance;

          Provides technical assistance to the Suffolk County Film Commission;

          Coordinates the production of motion pictures within the County by assisting in obtaining permits and by cultivating municipal support;

          Attends performances and showings of cultural activity groups such as operas, chamber music groups, repertory theater groups, art leagues and museums;

          Coordinates cultural programs and maintains calendar of events to avoid conflicts with other private and public programs;

          Organizes touring cultural programs and in-school cultural education;

          Updates listings in cultural affairs directory;

          Researches economic benefits of and funding opportunities for cultural programs and industries, such as motion pictures;

          Audits claims of grant recipients to verify accuracy of charges and assure that contract was properly fulfilled;

          Functions as public relations representative in cultural affairs for Suffolk County.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the functioning of cultural organizations in Suffolk County; good knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations; good knowledge of funding opportunities for the motion picture industry; good knowledge of basic business law and auditing techniques; ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with representatives of cultural activity groups, the motion picture industry, legislators and the general public; ability to evaluate eligibility of applicants for County assistance; ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.      

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

(a)        Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree and three years of administrative or management experience, two years of which must be related to the arts; or

(b)        Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five years of administrative or management experience, two years of which must be related to the arts; or

(c)               An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
